5 Ways to Stay Sane in a Crazy World

Meditating world

The world feels like it’s getting crazier every day. We have a maniac running the most important country in the world, the UK is about to commit economic suicide and social media is stealing and manipulating our data. This is not how we expected 2018 to turn out but this is the reality of the situation. With so much craziness going on in the world it can be hard to stay sane. Even just reading the news can make your head spin.

So how do you keep yourself sane in a world that seems determined to turn us all crazy? Here are some ways to make sure you keep your head straight when everything around you is spinning out of control.

Take a Break From Social Media

Seriously, switch it off. Social media is responsible for a lot of good things in our society. We can communicate instantly with people all over the world and stay connected with old friends. These capabilities are invaluable. However, there is a dark side to social media. It has created a mentality of desperation for validation and bred a society of people who crave likes and virtual attention. It has also put distance between people and reduced our ability to talk to each other face to face. Stop scrolling through social media and give yourself a break from that stress.

Meditate

Sometimes the best way to clear your head is to sit in silence and simply focus on your breathing. However you choose to meditate, spending just ten minutes each day doing nothing but being with yourself and feeling your body and breathing can make a huge difference to your mental health. When everything feels like too much, let your meditation take you to a quieter place.

Spend Time With People You Love

Whether it’s your family, significant other or close friends, spending time with people you love and care about can make you feel really good. It can also help you forget about some of the crazy that’s going on in the world. Create your own little microcosm with your nearest and dearest and let that be your safe space where you can talk freely, laugh, cry, and rant. Sometimes it needs to be done.

Volunteer Your Time

There’s virtually nothing you can do on your own to change the world. But, you can do your bit to make a difference by giving up some of your time to a worthy cause. Do you like animals? What about children? Or perhaps you love sports? Whatever it is you love, use it to help other people. It might not seem like much but the feeling you get when you give back is indescribable. You may well change someone’s life just by letting them know you have time for them.

Maintain a Good Work/Life Balance

When you retire, you won’t look back at your life and thank yourself for spending all of that time in the office. Instead you will look back fondly on the time you spent with your family and friends, doing things you love. It is fine to love your job and want to do well, but don’t let your job dominate your life as that’s a sure-fire way to lose your mind in this crazy world of ours. Take time for yourself and for the people you care about and future you will thank you.
