Paris - Musée d'orsay art collection

Which country has the world’s largest art collection? When you think of art collections, the cities of Paris, Florence, London and New York come to mind. Which country has the largest art collection in the world?

If you are looking for the city with the most art, there are actually many, but Paris really does take the lead. Go to the Louvre with The Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo or the Orsay Museum and see Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass, or Monet’s Rouen Cathedral. As of 2016, Paris has become the home of one of the largest private art collections in the world.

Thanks to the French billionaire Francois Pinault, the capital of love and art is now the home of a €1.2bn modern art collection. The businessman owns work from artists such as Mark Rothko and Damien Hirst. In addition to this private art collection, France is the number one destination for art lovers. Some of the other destinations for art collections in France include the Musée Picasso in the French Riviera, Musée Fabre in Montpellier, the Impressionists Museum in Normandy, and the Musée Matisse in Nice.

Pinault’s dream of permanently housing his art collection in Paris is finally a reality after years of it being housed in the Palazzo Grassi in Venice. The works of art in his collection range from paintings by Mondrian, to Rudolf Stingel, and Jeff Koons.

Next time you plan a trip somewhere with the desire to see as much art as possible, make France your top destination. Paris is of course top of the list, but don’t forget to travel around the country to admire art from famous artists such as Monet, Manet, Cézanne, Renoir and Degas among some.
