But, there is a lot of art out there. Indeed, the artwork displayed in many of the big galleries represents just a fraction of what the gallery has in storage. With so much art available and not enough time to see it all, it is hard to decide which galleries are worth a visit. We’ve put together some of the most famous art galleries on earth to put you on the right track.

The Louvre, Paris

This iconic Parisian building is quite possibly the most famous art gallery in the world. Home to the renowned Mona Lisa (La Joconde in French), the gallery sees around 15,000 visitors every day. All in all it is estimated that the museum boasts about 35,000 pieces of artwork and 38,000 objects.

Some of the Louvre’s permanent collections include Islamic art, Egyptian treasures and a selection of paintings and drawings from modern times.

The Guggenheim, New York

Famous primarily for its quirky architecture, the Guggnheim museum is shaped like a conch shell and offers visitors a rather unique experience. The artwork on display inside is simply hung on the walls and guests are invited to walk along a spiral ramp in order to see them.

The collection at the Guggenheim houses a number of works from incredibly well-known artists. Those on display include Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso.

The Hermitage, Saint Petersburg

It would probably take you about 3 or 4 days of constant walking and viewing to fully take in everything on offer at the Russian mega-gallery that is The Hermitage. Corridors upon corridors display works of art from historical masters and there is a very real possibility that you will get completely and utterly lost as you try and navigate the colossal building. Nevertheless, it is an experience unlike any other.

Gauguin, Rembrandt, Picasso, Michelangelo and Cézanne are just some of the huge names you will see within the walls of The Hermitage.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Situated in the heart of Amsterdam, the enormous and elegant building that contains the Rijksmuseum is a work of art in and of itself. It sits just behind that IAMSTERDAM sign you always see on Instagram. Within the museum you will find artwork that chronicles the history of the Netherlands and, more specifically, Amsterdam.

Special attention in the Rijksmuseum is paid to famous Dutch artists, including Vermeer – famous for the Girl with the Pearl Earring – and Rembrandt.

El Prado, Madrid

The Museo del Prado, which can be found in the centre of the Spanish capital, Madrid, is universally considered to have the most impressive collection of European art in the world. The works on display here span hundreds of years and encapsulate the stylistic changes that occurred in alignment with developments in European history.
