Staying healthy is a challenge and there are very few people on this planet who can honestly say they are as healthy as they can possibly be. But, the aim of the game is not to become some health-obsessed freak who only ever eats salad and runs twice a day. You should be able to enjoy your life to its fullest and stay healthy at the same time. You might not be the healthiest person on Earth, but you can be healthy enough to keep diseases and negative thoughts at bay. And you can do this easily. Being healthy doesn’t necessarily mean completely overhauling your lifestyle. It can be as simple as incorporating a few easy things into your daily routine that you weren’t doing beforehand.

In this article we will look at five things you can do to give your overall health a boost and make yourself happier.

Drink Lots of Water

It sounds so simple and yet so many people are chronically dehydrated. Water is the most incredible natural resource on the planet and it does wonders for your health. Not only does it keep all of your internal organs functioning properly, but it also makes your skin softer and you hair shinier. The recommended daily amount of water for an adult is about 1.2 litres. This doesn’t have to be plain water, it could be tea or squash. You should avoid juices and fizzy drinks as these are high in sugar and could actually dehydrate you.

Get Your Steps Up

If you normally take the elevator up to your office, try taking the stairs. If you take public transport, why not get off one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way. Most people in the UK spend way too much of their time sedentary and it wreaks havoc on our overall health. Try and walk as much as you can throughout the day, even if it is only for ten minutes at a time. A fitbit or other form of step counter could help you keep track of how much you are walking each day.

Stop Snacking

If you really need to, clear your cupboards of anything that you could mindlessly snack on. If you can stick to three square meals per day, you will find your overall health is dramatically improved. If you really need to snack to get you through the day, ditch the crisps and chocolate and opt for something healthier like nuts or carrot sticks.

Spend a Few Minutes on Yourself

We have busy and hectic lives and it is easy to forget that we need to breathe every now and again. Spend a few minutes each day on yourself. This could be by way of meditating, listening to music, going for a run – anything that helps you block out all of the internal chatter and re-focus your energy. If you don’t make time to do this you could end up seriously stressed and suffering from stress-related diseases.

Get Into a Good Sleep Routine

You might not think you need more than four hours of sleep but if you deprive your body of sufficient sleep you will soon see the effects. Your sleeping hours is when your body recovers and heals itself. If you take this away you strip yourself of the opportunity to fix yourself and you risk rapidly deteriorating as a result. Try and set yourself a decent bedtime and morning alarm and stick to it religiously. Eventually you will find you natural fall asleep and wake up at those times.
